Sailing on the merchant ship "Hercules" out of Boston (Benjamin Carpenter, master), 2nd mate Dodge provides a list of the crew, describes the various ports of call and the voyage that took the ship from the Azores and Canary Is., Mauritius, Pondicherry, Madras and Calcutta, and back Boston via South Africa, St. Helena and Ascension Islands, and Holland. He carefully records the prices and quantities of goods traded, describes the various ports of call, and includes pen & ink illustrations of Praya Bay, Azores, and Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

Carpenter, a resident of Poughkeepsie, was elected District Attorney of Dutchess County, N.Y. in 1858. In 1871 he was a delegate to the State Constitutional Convention, and the following year was temporary Chairman of the Republican State Convention. He was elected State Senator in 1875, County Judge in 1877, Chairman of Republican State Committee in 1882 and nominee for Lieutenant-Governor of New York that same year.
